THE CHALLENGE





Being the Sister Company of the MMYPEM Group, As Pontes is a company set up by professional partners with wide, extensive and proven experience in the field of industrial and precision machining, industrial assembly, fluid piping systems, supervision of assembly and commissioning of industrial installations, especially in the field of energy. Being a global market leader hailing from Spain, we had a few language barriers to overcome but that was the simple part. The real obstacle was implementing systems that the Spanish understood as their laws are very much relaxed versus ours here in South Africa.





Having a Multi-National Organisation come to South Africa in order to aid in the construction and commissioning of Steam generated Turbines to produce Renewable Energy - we knew that we had our work cut out for us. The Company was registered and kicked off in terms of operations at the speed of light. Hiring unique and skilled candidates would be the biggest challenge as these candidates are not necessarily freely available. Nonetheless, we hired the best of the best and implemented the HR Structure which ran operations from Kathu in the Northern Cape.



THE PROCESS





From the get go, every move we made had to have B-BBEE Implementation at the end of it. It was far greater than just setting up an HR Department. We had to make sure that the HR department could function independently without fail and support the Operations department over 500km's away. Therefore, we had to go mobile. This was a daunting task in itself, however; we implemented Employment Equity and Skills Development to such an extent that the Company was functioning based on the knowledge of its staff members who carried out their work diligently.





Thanks to our Team of experts, the Company has not seen a day whereby any of their statutory payments to SARS or DoL have not been met. Furthermore, As Pontes operations in South Africa has gone completely mobile with functions running independently to one another from multiple destinations in the country and yet, operations have never halted by any delays. Skills Development has increased job opportunities in the country as well as the Transfer of Skills to citizens who were never given the opportunity to grow professionally. If that's not a Win, then we don't know what is.



THE RESULT





As Pontes has passed (with flying colours) every audit that has been thrown at them by the South African Revenue of Service (SARS) and the Department of Labour (DoL). Their latest B-BBEE verification was also completed in February 2019 whereby they received a Level 8 QSE Certificate without any black ownership. We know what you are thinking, with the right mechanisms in place, dreams can come true.


We have also managed to go two (2) years without terminating and employee's contract of employment due to misconduct, and this is the kicker, based on the implemented performance management matrix, productivity has been running at 87% since the beginning of 2018. This also excludes the 98% success rate of not having an injury on site since the beginning of 2018.


We have been the 'right hand' of this global juggernaut and we have no intention of slowing down now. We were the conduits between this company being an Idea and becoming a Reality.
